The fort was built in 1550 and was originally owned by the rulers of Sawantwadi. However as the time passed by, the fort was annexed to the Portuguese who rebuilt it in 1705 to enhance their defenses. It is considerably smaller than any other fort in Goa. Built in a square shape, it has bastions at each of the four corners with embrasures for cannons and various other gunpoint holdings.
