Ponda Fort, also known as the Shivaji Fort was built by the Muslim ruler Adil Shah, but was destroyed in 1549 by the Portuguese. However, it was resurrected once again by the Marathis in 1675. It is named after the Maratha ruler Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who captured it in 1665. The fort houses a lush garden and a life-size statue of the Maratha ruler.
